When I Become a Whale examines how the structure of human relations produces ecological imbalance, taking as its case the alteration of water systems by corporations building data centres.
From an anthropological perspective, the logic of depletion is inseparable from patriarchy — not as a description of individuals but as the name of a historical operation, in which accumulation concentrates power and capital in order to dominate what cannot resist. Drinking water has now entered that structure through artificial intelligence. Water that belonged to no one in particular has become a resource — and once it is a resource, it requires protection, monitoring, critical limits. The apparatus of protection
is also the apparatus of appropriation. The work employs the aesthetics of generative bodies: anatomies extrapolated from
a system that continues as it does. The whale marks the direction of that extrapolation.

Short bio: 

Kristina Cyan is an artist working in moving image, installation and interactive systems. Her work examines the point at which images stopped representing and began deciding — how computational systems classify, predict and reorganise the world, and which bodies, identities and forms of knowledge they render illegible. Working from documents, incidents and technical material, and rooted in feminist and posthumanist thought, she treats technology not as a tool but as an agent of hybrid politics, with recurring attention to labour, evidence and the politics of visibility. Her works have been shown at mumok Cinema, Kunst Haus Wien and the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna, the European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, B3 Biennial of the Moving Image in Frankfurt, Hack the Promise in Basel and Brno House of Arts. She was nominated for the Ö1 Talent Prize for Fine Arts.
