The video installation To Achieve a Weightless State was created during IsidoraKrstić’s artist residency at the Process-Space Foundation in Balchik, a coastal town on Bulgaria’s Black Sea. Situated in a place primarily known as a holiday destination, the residency underscored the rising cost of living and the growing reality that leisure, rest and relaxation are becoming luxuries, if not impossibilities, for many. Departing from her usual artistic approach, Krstić places herself at the center of this video work. She documents her attempts to achieve a state of weightlessness in water, using this physical act as a metaphor for the everyday effort to maintain balance across the different aspects of her life—work, relationships, friendships, artistic practice, health, exercise and financial stability.

Isidora Krstić’s paintings begin with lots of intuitive sketching, a practice that, despite its looseness, works as a precise methodology. It captures current states of mind, shifting moods and reflections of her interactions with the world, translating them into form before they’re fully understood in words. The silver liquid running through the piece stands in for the different liquids that move through the body itself. Identity offers endless ways to read a body, layers of meaning placed onto it from outside and within. Underneath all of that, the body remains a vessel of liquids and matter, subject to the same basic conditions no matter how it’s interpreted. This is where the painting finds its real subject: making room for feelings that seem too much, too indulgent to sit with, and yet essential to face. Painting became a way to understand that excess. Working through it coil by coil, drip by drip, was its own form of thinking. The near symmetry gives the feeling a structure to move through, a shape built for the purpose to find out what it’sholding
